    How Can Pilates Really Help?

I've seen a lot of press lately, but I don't quite understand why or how Pilates can really help people dealing with cancer and/or treatment?

We work with some cancer patients that are dealing with the side effects of chemotherapy, radiation and other treatment protocols. Pilates helps by offering a less daunting fitness modality. An excellent book is "Cancer Fitness" by Dr. Anna Schwartz. It talks about how simple fitness programming can positively impact cancer patients and increase survivor stats. When our clients ask what types of exercise can be more "therapeutic" - we find that pilates works well for some people in this circumstance.

In addition to what Amy said, pilates is a non-impact, total body workout that increases circulation, flexibility and strength.  Oncology patients in treatment,  are usually compromised in all three of those areas due to the treatment protocols fighting their disease.  While pilates is not the only exercise regimen that can help with cancer, it is a great option because it is easily modified and the progression of the exercises helps the individuals to connect with their bodies and gauge their progress.
