Pilates & Cancer: Trinity Fitness + Spa

This summer we will feature Trinity Fitness + Spa’s CEO Amy Kelly as a special guest contributor. Amy opened Trinity Fitness + Spa in 2005 after she lost her mother to pancreatic cancer. Trinity has partnered with Peak Pilates to explore new ways that Pilates can make a positive impact on the quality of life for cancer patients.

On September 1, 2005 my business partner and I opened Trinity Fitness + Spa.

Inspired by my mother – who had passed away two years before following a tremendous battle with pancreatic cancer, and my husband's brother, who died one year before from cancer – Trinity's mission is to inspire women to be healthier: mind, body + spirit, and every person and program at Trinity is created to further that goal.

Our one-of-a-kind "Lois Membership" http://www.trinityfitnessandspa.com/lois_member.html provides a free fitness membership, spa discounts and personal training to ANY woman currently undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation treatment for cancer.

Our slogan, "We're not just lifting weights, we're lifting spirits!" is at the very heart of everything we do at Trinity to help women battling disease or PREVENT it.

I recently became one of the first trainers in the nation to receive the new ACSM certification to work specifically with cancer patients.

At Trinity, we are always looking for new ways to make it easier for clients to work out during their cancer treatment and receive the associated benefits. Pilates has become an integral part of the programming we offer in this area.

Amy - Sorry to learn of the loss of your mother and brother-in-law to cancer.

I also lost my mother to cancer. She was 25 years old when she died in 1963. In November 2006 I was diagnosed with stage 2 *** cancer. Thankfully, medical technology has progressed these 40 years plus and my prognosis is excellent.

I must commend you for passion in bringing Pilates work to aid those affected by cancer. Because of the knowledge I have as being a Pilates instructor, I've been able to aid my own recovery into being "normal" again. Pilates is also beneficial for those going through treatment in helping to combat fatigue, muscle aches and stiffness that go along with treatment.

Best regards,

Mercy

I am so happy to hear that you have opened a studio with special treatment for cancer patients. What an fantastic thing!

I am myself a Pilates instructor in europe.

A year after having completed my Peak training program and right in the procedure of opening up my own little studio I found myself diagnosed with breastcancer. What a shock. I was in super shape and felt my own body had betrayed me. Why me?

As Mercy I say I am lucky to live in a period where prognosis are good but I am haunted every day by the thought of a "come-back".

I was able to continue Pilates all through my treatments and after my mastectomy I quickly recovered flexibility and strenght. Thank you Pilates! It competely changed my way of thinking of my own body and myself. From having worked with a lot of FORCE and intensity I REALLY discovered the benefits of working with the Fundamentals. The only excercises I could do for a while...and all of a sudden I could really understand my clients who had other issues that made certain excercises hard for them.

I would be very interested in starting a similar concept to Trinity in my studio and reach out to all hospitals and clinics in my region.

Any good books to read ?

Cancer is still such a scary and forbidden word to many...

Thank you for sharing your story Mercy and good luck Amy!
